Dissertation at Sea

Ok, it sounds good on the surface. The waves are flowing; the mind is flowing. But, when my traveling companion [who shall remain nameless] says on the 3rd day, “don’t eat that you’ll get fat” immediately after she ate two chocolate chip cookies for breakfast ... it has the capacity to get on my nerves and take the mind away from academic pursuits. Hell, I am going to chill out in the hot tub.

Tell Discovery: No Palin!

Stolen directly from a Facebook advertisement:

"Drill, Baby, Drill" comes to Discovery?

The media conglomerate Discovery Communications used to be known for their earth-friendly offerings. But they’ve just paid millions to Sarah Palin to host a “nature” show, despite her decidedly anti-environmental stance: She vocally advocates for habitat-destroying oil drilling, she denies global warming is a human-caused threat, and she spearheaded a brutal wolf-slaughter program as governor of Alaska.

It’s one thing if Fox News gives Sarah Palin a platform. But when Discovery Communications – home to the Discovery Channel, the "Planet Earth" series, the Science Channel, Animal Planet, and TreeHugger.com – gives a show to Sarah Palin, it undercuts everything the Discovery brand has come to represent.

Anti-environmentalism has no place in the Discovery Communications lineup. Demand that the company cancel "Sarah Palin's Alaska" before it airs.

The former partial-term Alaska governor is reportedly getting paid $1.2 million per episode to host a television series called "Sarah Palin's Alaska," to be broadcast on TLC, one of Discovery Communications' channels. And if Palin runs for president in 2012, a show that provides her the opportunity to greenwash her environmental record on a mainstream, eco-friendly channel is downright dangerous.

Here’s what Sarah Palin’s real Alaska is:

  • She accelerated Alaska's cruel aerial wolf-hunting program while in office, introducing a $150 bounty for each slaughtered wolf's forelimb.
  • She made a personal appeal to Alaska voters to oppose a ballot measure that would have stopped the immense Pebble Mine operation from dumping cyanide and mining waste into streams that make their way to Bristol Bay, home to the largest sockeye salmon fishery in the world.
  • When President Bush finally agreed to list the polar bear as a threatened species in 2008 because of global warming's effects on its habitat, the governor sued to challenge the listing.
  • Armed with her "Drill, Baby, Drill" catchphrase, Palin called for opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Cook Inlet to oil and gas drilling.

With such a disastrous environmental track record, how could Sarah Palin get a nature show on an eco-conscious media platform like Discovery? The answer may lie in Discovery's COO, Peter Liguori, who joined Discovery in December after a previous stint at Palin's other TV home: Fox Broadcast Co.

We can't let an anti-environment extremist like Sarah Palin take over Discovery and spread her "drill here, drill now" message on a science and environment network.

Speak out now and demand that Discovery pull Sarah Palin's show before it airs.

Tea Baggers Anti-Parti

I have been planning an Tea Baggers Anti-Parti [kinda like the Anti-Federalists = but the opposite] for Thursday in Washington DC. Any ideas for my parti? I am bringing my business cards, lots of flags, and my mother as body guard. Thinkin' about buying an electric blow horn like that REPUBLICAN Senator had at one of the last Tea Bagger's events. What are you doing on Thursday?

OAH Aftermath

So, I return home from the OAH and the world is falling apart ... or is it? My president just overturned 50 years of Cold War history this afternoon, with the help of most of the other world leaders. Finally, he is fulfilling that Nobel Prize he earned 25 years ago ... snicker. Then, my mother was waiting to watch Larry King (as she has want to do) and the Campbell Brown show had on M2 Martin ... apparently a card carrying union member named Mary Matalin, some REPUBLICAN analyst fighting with my Roland Martin. I do not remember what she said but it made me angry.

BTW, thank you Dr. Marilyn Irving and Dr. Bill Cosby for the activist work that you do for our American children.

I did not know what to do with this anger until I saw Senator Randy Bragdon interviewed on Anderson Cooper [who by the way lives down the street from my favorite NYC Sunday brunch locale across from Anna Wintour's house]. Senator Bragdon has inspired my MOLDY TEABAG LIST because he did not answer Anderson Cooper's questions. I had made tea before I left for the OAH and came home to a moldy teabag in the jug. It is currently on my front doorstep to welcome all conservatives to discuss this and that when they happen upon my stoop. Feel free to add to the list ... include an explanation of why you put them on the list.

MOLDY TEABAG LIST
  1. Mary Matalin
  2. Senator Randy Bragdon

Apparently, there is a liberal movement started to crash the party ... power to the people. If this doesn't fill my FBI file, I don't know what will.

Stoughton Lynd still lives and we continue to do Howard Zinn's work,
